I hate when I meet normal people who say that they are “just like” or that they “totally understand” mentally ill characters. Because they don’t, they don’t get what it’s like to have a mental illness, they can watch as many god damn movies or know as many people as they’d like that are affected by it, but they will never be able to honestly say they get it without first having it. Mental illness is hard to understand, that’s why people who have it tend to be crazy. It’s painful to live your life without ever truly understanding yourself.

Mental hospitals have this weird type of comfort associated with them. There you can be as fucked up a you want, you can shake and sob for no reason, you can scream your diagnosis across the ward, you can explain all the terrible things you feel and be understood, you can sneak out for a cigarette, tell strangers all your dirty secrets and then listen to theirs. In a mental hospital there exists a community that I would kill to have exist on the outside, because when you’re in a room and you know everybody is fucked up like you there’s nothing to hide.
